ASUS VivoBook 14 X412FA Drivers, Price, and Reviews– Asus recently launched its latest VivoBook laptop series called VivoBook 14 and VivoBook 15 in India. Of the two, the 14-inch version claims to be the smallest and most colorful 14-inch Ultrabook in the world. It’s a rather odd title and very specific to claim a bet, but it is what it is. This new laptop series focuses on mid-range compactness and performance to hit a starting price of Rs. 49,990.
However, rather than just dropping the nice components into the base chassis, which would be an easy way to achieve this price goal, the VivoBook 14 X412FA actually comes in several bright color options and offers a modern design, with a thin frame around the screen. . All the features make it a delightful little laptop, and now it’s time to see if it lives up to that promise.
Asus VivoBook 14 design
The VivoBook 14 uses a plastic chassis, but high-quality plastic and feels very sturdy. We have Peacock Blue trim, which looks really nice. The colors shift between purple and blue depending on your viewing angle. Other Asus VivoBook 14 color choices are Slate Gray and Transparent Silver.
The screen looks large, in large part because of the thin bezels on three sides. The ones on the left and right are only 5.7mm thick, while the ones above are a little thicker so they can accommodate a webcam. The bottom bezel is much wider but you can’t see it mostly because the clever hinge mechanism hides the bottom of the cover, behind the body of the laptop. It also lifts the bottom of the laptop two degrees, which offers a more ergonomic typing position.
The 14-inch screen on the Asus VivoBook 14 has full-HD resolution and an aspect ratio of 16: 9. The panel doesn’t have the best viewing angles, and colors look a little dim due to the narrow coverage of the NTSC color spectrum of 45 percent. It’s a 60Hz panel and you get a matte, anti-glare coating, which comes in handy when working under lots of artificial lighting.
The keyboard area is one piece of plastic and there is no flex in the keyboard even with tight typing. The keys have a comfortable ride, are well spaced, and have three levels of the backlight. The trackpad is quite large in size and tracking is smooth. You get the fingerprint sensor in the top right corner of the trackpad, which worked fine for us.
You also get some air vents here but to access RAM or storage devices you have to remove the entire bottom panel as there is no quick access door. In the box, the laptop ships with several manuals and a 45W charger. The charger is a very portable little square brick.

We briefly reviewed the mid variant, the Core i5-8265U CPU, coupled with 8GB RAM, paired with 512GB SSD storage, runs on Windows Home and is powered by a 37Wh 2-cell battery.

Build and Design
The VivoBook 14 X412 comes with a matte plastic design for the top cover and base panel. As proclaimed this laptop is really small and compact. The screen (as we have seen is ZenBook) is sculpted to the widest extent with a display that is a screen-to-body ratio of 87 percent. The display bezel is matte black and the rest is monotonous.
Even though the laptop doesn’t look stiff but it can handle everyday insulation. We have encountered a large amount of flexibility across the width of the screen and in the keyboard area. Speaking of the keyboard area, the area around it gets a dotted finish for an extra boost on the character.
The frameless four-sided NanoEdge design makes visuals more immersive and less distracting. Just like the recent ZenBook, this one is also equipped with an ErgoLift hinge, which gives you comfortable typing, improving cooling and audio performance.
PORT
The VivoBook 14 X412 offers a good number of connectivity options. On the left side of the body, there is a round-pin power port for charging, a full-size HDMI port, a USB-A 3.1 port, a USB-C 3.1 port, and a 3.5mm audio jack for headsets. While on the right side, we have a Kensington lock slot, a USB-A 2.0 port, several LED indicators and a microSD card slot.
The company refuses to add full-sized SD cards to make workflow easier. And adding another USB-A 3.1 port would be nice but most mainstream laptop users should have no reason to complain about either. This laptop also features a fingerprint scanner on the top right corner of the touchpad for faster and safer unlocking via Windows Hello.
Display
The VivoBook 14 X412 is packaged in a 14-inch Full HD LCD screen with a minimal bezel, which is 87% screen-to-body ratio and a 178-degree viewing angle. Since this is an LCD panel, it does not support a wide range of the sRGB color gamut but is still capable of reproducing 59 percent of colors in the sRGB color space and 43 percent of colors in the Adobe RGB color space.
Either way, colors on the display appear mostly faded and whitish whether you are surfing the web, watching videos, or playing games. The screen is also coated with a matte finish which reduces most of the glare falling on it so it is readable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Keyboard, Mouse, Audio & Webcam
The typing experience on this laptop is extraordinary. In fact, the tactile feedback with the 1.3mm backlit keys is relatively shallow. The buttons are well placed, but there is no Numpad on it. The Delete button is placed adjacent to the power button, which can cause unwanted sleep and hibernation modes.
Also, the hinge design comes into play here as it lifts the keyboard platform by 2 degrees and the hand falls naturally in place to type. Overall the keyboard on the X412 is satisfactory and well maintained.
For the trackpad, it’s made of plastic, but smooth enough for movement to be effective. The clicks on these are pretty good, and thanks to Microsoft Windows Precision Drivers, the accuracy and gestures work really well.
The trackpad also has a capacitive fingerprint sensor that you can use to log into the machine (under Windows Hello). Overall, the sensors work very well.
The down-firing dual SonicMaster speakers on the VivoBook X412 are disappointing. For the most part, the audio feels blunt and flat at max volume. Speaking of maximum volume, the speakers are not that loud, you better get speakers or Bluetooth headphones. Well, this laptop is equipped with an HD webcam that provides a realistic color experience.
Performance
The unit we received for review was powered by an Intel Core i5-8265U (clocked at 1.60GHz), coupled with 8GB of RAM, paired with a 512GB Intel 660P Series PCIe NVMe solid-state drive. On GeekBench, the VivoBook 14 scored a score of 2093 (single-core) and 8726 (multi-core). We ran the 3DMark Sky Diver test which gave a score of 7529.
Switching between the tasks was seamless. I’ve used this engine for a lot of typing, small photo editing, and YouTube / movies. If you are into the creative field, this laptop will be able to run Adobe’s editing applications such as Lightroom and Photoshop. Overall, the performance is sweet.
Battery and Heat
The Vivobook X412 operates on a 2-cell 37watt-hour battery. In our daily use of streaming videos on Netflix / YouTube, running Chrome (4-6 tabs opened) and a little documentation with 70-80% brightness, the average battery lasted about 5 hours 45 minutes, which is pretty good. Meanwhile, charging from 11 percent to 100 takes an average of nearly 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Speaking of heat management, the VivoBook X412 uses a blower-style cooling method, as opposed to traditional cooling solutions which require a heat pipe to work with the heat sink to allow the fan to lower the temperature. There are vents in the laptop chassis for air intake through the fan which is then circulated to the inside to reduce heat.

Decision
ASUS Vivobook X412 is a well-designed laptop that fits itself in a variety of different scenarios and needs. As said before, if you want a laptop for browsing, documenting, and watching movies, you can’t go wrong with this one, especially if it’s expensive;
